Alabama, Oregon on top in college football polls; LSU falls in AP

The major polls agree on the top two teams in college football again this week, but not on No. 3.

Sunday’s Associated Press and USA Today coaches polls both have Alabama and Oregon in the top two positions.

AP voters, though, as some suspected, dropped Louisiana State to No. 4 after the Tigers struggled in a 38-22 home win over 1-AA Towson on Saturday. This came a week after both the AP and coaches’ polls dropped LSU from 2 to 3 after a 12-10 win at Auburn, which had struggled to beat Louisiana Monroe.

Florida State is the new No. 3 in the AP poll but the coaches kept LSU at No. 3 and Florida State at No. 4.

UCLA, a big winner at Colorado, is back in the AP poll at No. 25 but has not yet rejoined the USA Today index. The Bruins are No. 28 based on points in “others receiving votes.”

USC, idle this weekend, stayed at No. 13 in AP and moved up one position to No. 12 in USA Today.

The AP top 10 is Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, LSU, Georgia, followed by South Carolina, Kansas State, West Virginia, Notre Dame and Florida.

Stanford’s loss to Washington dropped the Cardinal 10 spots to No. 18 in the AP and nine spots to No. 18 in the coaches’ poll.

Oregon State, a 38-35 winner at Arizona late Saturday night, is No. 13 in the AP but only 17 in USA Today.
