Notre Dame and Alabama on top of latest college football polls
Notre Dame’s 22-13 victory over USC on Saturday night brought clarity to a crazy college football season and made Sunday’s polls as simple as filling out a ballot.
Notre Dame (12-0) was a clear-cut No. 1 in the major polls, with Alabama and Georgia taking the second and third spots.
The battle for the No. 2 position will be solved next weekend in Atlanta when Alabama and Georgia face each other for the Southeastern Conference championship game.
The winner of that contest will play the Irish for the BCS title on Jan. 7 in South Florida.
Notre Dame, the only undefeated team eligible for this year’s BCS title, received all 60 first-place votes in Sunday’s Associated Press poll.
Following Alabama and Georgia is Ohio State at No. 4 after completing a 12-0 season Saturday with its win over Michigan. The Buckeyes are not eligible for the BCS title because of NCAA sanctions but can win the AP crown.
Florida is fifth in the AP, followed by Oregon, Kansas State, Stanford, Louisiana State and Texas A&M.;
The USA Today coaches’ poll has Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia and Oregon in the top four spots. Notre Dame garnered 56 of 59 first-place votes, with Alabama receiving two and Georgia one. Florida is fifth in the poll, followed by LSU, Kansas State, Texas A&M;, Stanford and South Carolina.
