The 10 best sports movies of all time, No. 10: ‘Chariots of Fire’

A week or so ago, we asked you to vote for the 10 best sports movies of all time. And, 9,280 ballots later we unveil your picks.

No. 10: Chariots of Fire (650 first-place votes, 16,426 points)

Well, this one surprised me. I didn’t think it would make the list at all, but a late surge of votes moved it into 10th place just ahead of “Pride of the Yankees” and”Moneyball”.

Released in 1981, “Chariots of Fire” was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including best picture, where it was up against “Atlantic City,” “On Golden Pond,””Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Reds.”

Based on true events, “Chariots of Fire” tells the story of two British athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice.

The iconic score of the movie, which you can hear in the video below, has become one of the most famous pieces of music in history, and is used in many clips honoring (or parodying) the film.
