Mike Eruzione to auction off his 1980 Olympics hockey jersey

Mike Eruzione, captain of the legendary 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team that upset the Soviet Union and went on to win the gold medal, is auctioning off the jersey he wore during the Olympics.

Want to buy it? Hopefully your coin jar has a lot of loose change, because the expected sale price is $1 million.

So, if Eruzione is parting with such an important piece of his legacy, he surely must need the money. Not really.

“Fortunately, I don’t need the money to help me,” Eruzione told ESPN.com. “I’ve done very well over the last 32 years and hopefully will continually do well in the future with appearances.... I’m not doing this for my own purpose or gain, in fact, it’s not for my purpose at all. I think I can do a lot of good for others with what I get. My first grandson, Michael, was born a week ago. I’ve thought about his future and the cost of tuition for my daughter and things like that.”

Eruzione is also auctioning off his entire suit from the gold-medal ceremony and his clothing from the opening ceremony.

One thing Eruzione said will never part with: His gold medal.

Good to know that some things are still priceless.
