Dolphins’ Chad Johnson posts bail on domestic charge, is released

Chad Johnson, who was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of domestic violence, has been released from a Broward County, Fla., jail Sunday after posting a bond for $2,500.

The Miami Dolphins receiver was taken into custody by police after his wife, Evelyn Lozada, said Johnson head-butted her during an argument in front of their house in Davie, Fla.

According to police, Lozada confronted Johnson after finding a receipt for condoms as she was bringing groceries into their home and a “heated argument” ensued. Police said Lozada had lacerations on her forehead. Johnson told police that his wife had head-butted him.

If convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, Johnson would face a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. He could also receive community service, probation or be ordered to take anger-management classes.

Johnson, who is 34 and entering his 12th season in the NFL, has been known for both his playful personality and an ability to make big plays on the football field, leading him to be a central figure in the HBO reality series “Hard Knocks,” which has been filming at the Miami summer camp.

Since turning pro, this is Johnson’s first known arrest, although he was arrested in college for a domestic dispute.

Johnson and Lozada, who stars in VH1’s reality show “Basketball Wives,” were married in July. Soon after, he legally changed his last name from Ochocinco back to Johnson at the insistence of Lozada.
