Giants, Matt Cain agree to record six-year deal

Matt Cain has that hefty new contract he hoped for before opening day.

Cain and the San Francisco Giants agreed Monday to a $127.5-million, six-year contract, the largest deal for a right-handed pitcher in baseball history.

The agreement adds $112.5 million over five years to the $15-million salary for 2012 that was remaining in his previous deal. Cain gets a $5-million signing bonus as part of the new contract and $20 million annually from 2013-17. The deal includes a $21-million option for 2018 with a $7.5-million buyout that, if exercised, would raise the total to $141 million over seven seasons.

Cleveland Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez was suspended for five games and fined by Major League Baseball for intentionally throwing at Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki during a spring-training game.

Jimenez will serve his suspension during the first five games of the season unless he asks the players’ association to appeal the decision by MLB senior vice president Joe Garagiola Jr.

Leaf is arrested for second time in days

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was arrested again Monday, only days after he posted bail on similar charges that he burglarized a home and stole prescription drugs, Montana authorities said.

Leaf was first arrested on Friday after police found oxycodone pills in his golf bag that an acquaintance later said Leaf stole from his home. Then early Monday, three days after posting a $76,000 bond, he was arrested again on accusations that he broke into another home outside Great Falls, said Chris Hickman, commander of the Central Montana Drug Task ForceChris Hickman .

Leaf’s attorney, Ken Olson, did not respond to a call for comment. A call to Leaf’s publicist was not returned Monday.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he won’t stand in the way if the New Orleans Saints ask Bill Parcells to take over as interim coach for suspended Sean Payton.

Before the Saints pick someone to run the team this year, though, Goodell still has to rule on Payton’s appeal of his season-long suspension, along with the appeals of shorter suspensions for assistant coach Joe Vitt and General Manager Mickey Loomis and penalties handed down to the team.

Miguel Angel Ponce scored late in overtime, giving Mexico a 2-1 victory over Honduras in the final of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament at Kansas City, Kan.

Both teams had already qualified for the Summer Games in London by winning Saturday’s semifinal matches.

The financially beleaguered Assn. of Volleyball Professionals has been sold to a 37-year-old Irvine native and former executive at a multinational computer technology company, the league announced.

Donald Sun, a former executive at the Fountain Valley-based Kingston Technology Co., said recently in a phone interview that he paid $2 million for the professional beach volleyball league, which was previously owned by Nick Lewin, a managing member of DFA PVA II Partners.

Lewin gained control of the AVP in December 2010 when his firm used $3.8 million of debt to buy the tour that in August of that year had shut down and canceled its five remaining events when it ran out of money. The AVP held one event last year, in Huntington Beach in October.

Sun, who resides in Newport Beach, said he plans to put the headquarters of Los Angeles-based AVP there too.

Arkansas football Coach Bobby Petrino veered off a two-lane highway and crashed his motorcycle over the weekend, which sent him to a hospital and left him in what his family described only as “stable condition.” He is expected to make a full recovery.

American cyclist Levi Leipheimer felt “lucky to be alive” after he was hit from behind by a car while training for a race in Spain.

Leipheimer was treated at a hospital for a sore and swollen lower left leg, but he had no broken bones, his Italian team said.

Leipheimer was training by himself for the Tour of Basque Country.
