Ducks’ Jonas Hiller expects to attend training camp
It appears one of the Ducks’ major off-season questions has been answered.
Goalie Jonas Hiller says he is no longer suffering from the vertigo symptoms that plagued him last season and expects to attend training camp next month.
The All-Star goalie said Friday he’s been practicing without symptoms in his native Switzerland since July 10 and is eager to be back on the ice with his teammates after sitting out almost the entire second half of last season.
“It’s great to feel better,” Hiller said. “It’s been a long process but I feel great, and I’m ready to help this team win.”
Even though doctors were unable to pinpoint what exactly caused him to have vertigo, the 29-year-old is confident he will be healthy this season. Hiller said taking part in more than a month of training sessions similar to NHL practices has convinced him that he’s ready to reclaim his spot in the Ducks’ crease.
That’s good news for the Ducks, who are counting on Hiller to shoulder the majority of the goaltending duties once again after having to rely on Ray Emery and Dan Ellis last season.
Hiller was limited to appearances in three games after the All-Star break as he battled symptoms that left him light-headed and disoriented. He attempted a late-season comeback in a game against Nashville in March, but was pulled after giving up three goals in less than 12 minutes.
Hiller was one of the league’s top goalies at the All-Star break, finishing the season with a 26-16-3 record and a .924 save percentage.
With Hiller expected to be healthy, the last big off-season question remaining for the Ducks is whether Teemu Selanne, who finished tied for eighth in league scoring last season, will return for his 19th season.
The Ducks open training camp Sept. 17.
