College football: San Diego State wants to build a new stadium

San Diego State unveiled details Thursday of a $250-million stadium it wants to build at the site of the former Qualcomm Stadium.

The stadium would be built in conjunction with a proposed campus expansion that supporters hope to place on the November 2018 ballot. It would seat 35,000 for San Diego State football and a possible pro soccer team, and would be expandable to 55,000 if the city were to attract another NFL team following the relocation of the Chargers to Los Angeles.

Time is of the essence because some at City Hall want to close the stadium, known as SDCCU Stadium, at the end of 2018.

The school is trying to get the city to keep the stadium open beyond that. Athletic director J.D. Wicker said that SDSU hopes a new stadium could be open in time for the 2022 season.

Coach Jimbo Fisher will leave Florida State for Texas A&M after Saturday’s regular-season finale and Florida State has started the process of vetting potential replacements, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither Texas A&M nor Florida State has publicly discussed details of the Aggies’ coaching search. ... Coach Dave Doeren and North Carolina State have agreed to a new five-year contract. A person familiar with the situation said the move came after Doeren talked with Tennessee officials about their coaching vacancy. Financial terms of the deal weren’t immediately available and it is unclear if Doeren was formally offered the Tennessee job to replace fired coach Butch Jones.

Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State is the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which goes to college football’s top senior or fourth-year senior quarterback. Rudolph leads the nation in yards passing with 4,553 and has passed for 35 touchdowns. Among the other 10 finalists were Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett. ... Clemson said that starting linebacker Tre Lamar, sidelined for the Tigers’ last two games, also will sit out the ACC championship game against Miami on Saturday night because of continuing shoulder problems. ... Texas junior safety DeShon Elliott said he will skip the Longhorns’ bowl game and make himself available for the NFL draft. The Thorpe Award finalist led the Longhorns with six interceptions as Texas became bowl eligible for the first time since 2014. He is the third Texas player to leave for the draft or transfer before the bowl game.
