The Hokies (12-8, 4-3) took a 61-59 lead on a basket by Kerry Blackshear Jr. with 8 minutes 5 seconds to play.
Seth Allen made two free throws to cut Virginia Tech’s deficit to 72-70, but Marcus Paige made two free throws with 17.8 seconds remaining to push the North Carolina lead to four points.
Roy Williams earned his 350th victory with the Tar Heels and became the first NCAA coach to win at least 350 games at two Division I schools. He won 418 games at Kansas.
No. 16 Providence 82, at No. 4 Villanova 76: Ben Bentil scored 31 points, including 10 in overtime, and the Friars (17-3, 5-2 Big East Conference) ended the Wildcats’ conference winning streak at 22 games.
Kris Dunn had 13 points and 14 assists for Providence.
Ryan Arcidiacono scored 19 points for the Wildcats (17-3, 7-1).
at Temple 89, No. 8 Southern Methodist 80: Devin Coleman made all seven of his three-point shots and finished with a career-high 23 points for the Owls (11-7, 5-2 American Athletic Conference).
Quenton DeCosey had 19 points for the Owls in their highest-scoring game this season.
Sterling Brown scored 19 points for the Mustangs (18-1, 7-1), who made only three of 14 three-point shots.
at No. 9 Iowa 83, Purdue 71: Jarrod Uthoff scored 22 points and the Hawkeyes (16-3, 7-0 Big Ten Conference) won their ninth game in a row.
Adam Woodbury had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes, who have defeated four ranked teams since late December.
Vince Edwards had 19 points and P.J. Thompson had 16 for the Boilermakers (17-4, 5-3), who started the season 14-1.
