Oakland ace Sonny Gray, a Cy Young contender who leads the American League with a 2.06 earned-run average, was unable to start Thursday against the AL East-leading Blue Jays in Toronto because of a sore back.

Athletics Manager Bob Melvin said Gray (12-4) also would not be able to start Friday in Baltimore but might be able to pitch sometime during the weekend series against the Orioles. The A’s had to juggle their rotation, with Jesse Chavez moving up a day to face the Blue Jays, who won, 4-2, for their 11th straight victory.

Etc.

Texas left fielder Josh Hamilton missed his second consecutive game because of soreness in his left knee, and the Rangers ordered an MRI test for Friday. . . . Minnesota placed right-hander Phil Hughes, its opening-day starter, on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his lower back.
