Football: Narbonne is looking for site to practice after school shutdown

Harbor City Narbonne, the only high school in the Los Angeles Unified School District still playing in a state football bowl game, is searching for an off-campus site to practice today after the announcement that all district schools have been closed because of a bomb threat, Coach Manuel Douglas said Tuesday morning.

Douglas said he’s hoping to receive permission from a nearby Southern Section school to gather his players together to at least have a walk through even though they won’t have access to equipment under the current circumstances.

“As long as we have a football and place to use it, we’ll figure it out,” he said.

Later Tuesday, Douglas said Gardena Serra Coach Scott Altenberg has made his practice field available for Tuesday afternoon, and Douglas said he’s grateful.

“We got no cleats, no shoulder pads, no helmets. We’ll treat it like a Monday,” he said.

Narbonne is scheduled to leave for Sacramento on Friday to play on Saturday in the Division I-A bowl game at Sacramento State.

There are not many athletic events scheduled on Tuesdays in the district because it’s usually a teacher’s development day. But schools are involved in tournaments.

Even charter schools are affected by the shutdown. Lake Balboa Birmingham Athletic Director Rick Prizant said all sporting events have been canceled until further notice.
