Boys’ basketball: Riverside North (16-1) suffers first defeat in double overtime
North suffers first defeat to San Diego Morse
Despite a lack of size and having just two seniors on its roster, Riverside North kept finding ways to win en route to a 16-0 start.
The Huskies seemed on the verge of pulling out another victory on Monday in the one-day La Salle tournament against San Diego Morse. They held a three-point lead with 10 seconds left in regulation after Dikymbe Martin made two free throws.
But Justin Davis, who finished with 42 points, made a three-pointer with three seconds left to send the game into overtime and Morse ended up prevailing, 96-88, in double overtime.
North had trouble dealing with 6-foot-11 sophomore center Brandon McCoy in the final two overtimes. He finished the game with 27 points and 20 rebounds.
Martin was fabulous for North, scoring 35 points. Parker Williams came off the bench to make three clutch threes for North. Deshaun Highler added 16 points.
In another close game, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer and fell to Campbell Hall, 55-52. Aaron Holiday made 13 of 18 free throws and finished with 22 points for Campbell Hall, which faces No. 1 Sierra Canyon on Tuesday. Gabe Salazar added 14 points and Jordan Cohen had 13. Chibueze Jacobs led Notre Dame with 17 points.
