Boys’ basketball: Birmingham knocks off El Camino Real
The West Valley League has been pretty much dominated by El Camino Real and Taft in recent years, but there’s a new team ready to make a run at the league title.
Birmingham showed Friday night it must be dealt with after knocking off the Conquistadores, 68-61. Birmingham is 15-4 overall and 4-0 in league going into a Wednesday first-place showdown at home against Taft. Devante Doutrive scored 21 points, Deschon Winston had 17 and Adrian Byrd-Jelinek added 14.
Kesean Davis had 27 points in Taft’s 87-57 win over Cleveland.
In the Coliseum League, Lafayette Dorsey completed a big week with a 27-point performance in Dorsey’s 93-82 win over Fremont. Marquis Mckinzy led Fremont with 24 points.
In the East Valley League, Grant defeated Monroe, 58-43. Alex McQueen and Joseph Lara had 18 points each. Poly defeated Verdugo Hills, 65-60. Angel Reinosa had 20 points and 10 rebounds.
In the Eastern League, South Gate improved to 5-0 with a 47-27 win over South East. Jose Velasquez had 13 points.
In the Western League, Westchester defeated Fairfax, 53-47. Keith Fisher scored 17 points and Terrell Waiters had 14. Hamilton defeated University, 65-52. Will Johnson scored 26 points in Palisades’ 72-65 overtime win over LACES.
