Poly’s Ariana Washington sweeps girls’ 100 and 200

Perhaps giving spectators a preview of next week’s state track and field finals, Long Beach Poly senior Ariana Washington won all three of her events Friday night in the CIF Southern Section Masters meet at Cerritos College.

The All-American sprinter, who has signed a letter of intent with Oregon, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the third year in a row and anchored the Jackrabbits’ winning 400 relay. She clocked 11.49 seconds in the 100, 0.22 of a second off last year’s Masters time, and 23.62 in the 200, 0.44 off last year’s time.

The Jackrabbits’ 400 relay of Kenyla Miles, Autumn Wright, Jade Lewis and Washington, ran a national-leading time of 45.25 to finish over a full second ahead of second-place Vista Murrieta. Lewis was second in the 100 (11.75) and 200 (24.15). Poly freshman Kaelin Roberts won the 400 in 53.39, and Wright was third in 54.94.

Another Jackrabbits senior, Louisiana State-bound Kymber Payne, was first in the 300 hurdles in 41.35, the fourth-fastest time in the country this year. Poly’s 1,600 relay of Roberts, Hollie Harris, Ebony Crear and Wright capped the meet by winning in 3:41.31, the second-fastest time in the country this year.

Northwood senior Bethan Knights ran a personal-best of 9:54.65 in the 3,200 but couldn’t top the national record of 9:48.59, set by Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks in 1996. Knights’ time was the fifth-fastest all-time in the U.S.

Haley Dorris won the 1,600 in 4:44.60, and Great Oak teammate Destiny Collins was second in 4:45.26 and also took second in the 3,200. Anevay Hiehle of Redondo Union won the 800 in 2:09.19. Defending state pole vault champion Kaitlyn Merritt of Santa Margarita missed her three attempts at the opening height of 12 feet 1 inch and failed to qualify for the state preliminaries. She had entered Friday’s meet as the state leader at 13-9. Marguerite Crockem of Chino won the event at 11-7.

Dos Pueblos senior Stamatia Scarvelis won the girls’ shotput with a throw of 52-9 and the discus with a throw of 154-9. Harvard-Westlake sophomore Courtney Corrin was first in the long jump at 19-6.

UCLA signee Curtis Godin of Mater Dei won the boys’ 100 in 10.55, and Vista Murrieta’s Michael Norman won the 200 in 20.82, the third-fastest time in the nation this year, to clip Godin by 0.03 of a second. Misana Viltz of Millikan won the 110 hurdles in 13.80, Austin Tinsley of Santa Margarita won the 300 hurdles in 37.25, David Manahan of Harvard-Westlake won the 800 in 1:52.96, Sydney Gidabuday of El Modena won the 1,600 in 4:09.54, and Big Bear’s Caleb Webb won the 3,200 in 8:59.17

Great Oak’s Jordan Lucas, Nick Fisher, Damion Marshall and LaQuan Williams won the boys’ 400 relay and Poly’s Mary’ea Harris, Malik Dennis, Daveon Howard and Christopher Donowa won the 1,600 in 3:14.79.
