Dodgers’ Zack Greinke headed for surgery, out eight weeks

The Dodgers knew it would hurt and now have a better idea of just how much.

The damage to right-hander Zack Greinke’s collarbone came more into focus Friday when the Dodgers announced he would have an operation Saturday to have a rod inserted to stabilize his fractured clavicle and be out about eight weeks.

Greinke injured the collarbone Thursday when Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin charged the mound in the sixth inning after being hit with a pitch. The two collided shoulders.

The injury to the right-handed Greinke is to his left collarbone, so the Dodgers are probably crossing fingers that he can start throwing earlier than if it had injured his right shoulder.

Doctors Neal ElAttrache and John Itamura are scheduled to perform the surgery on the Dodgers’ new $147-milllion pitcher. Greinke had a CT scan Friday that showed the need to align the clavicle.

The Dodgers have yet to announce who would replace Greinke in the rotation. He was making just his second start for the Dodgers when the brawl erupted. If he is out 60 days, he would miss about 12 starts.

Greinke was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday. The Dodgers called up reliever Shawn Tolleson, who will probably join the bullpen until the Dodgers need to replace Greinke in the rotation -- Tuesday against the Padres.
