Dodgers expand Spanish-language TV broadcasts
The Dodgers are expanding their Spanish-language cable TV broadcasts this season, upping the telecasts from 30 to 50 games in 2012.
As part of an effort by Fox to increase its Spanish sports broadcasts throughout the Los Angeles area, and nationally, games will be on Prime Ticket and carried by Time Warner, Cox and Bright House cable companies. Fox is still negotiating with other providers.
The Dodgers have hired Jaime Jarrin’s son, Jorge Jarrin, and long-time coach Manny Mota as broadcasters for their Spanish-language telecasts. Jorge Jarrin previously acted as “Captain Jorge” covering freeway traffic in a helicopter for KABC 790.
Fox said it will also produce Spanish broadcasts for the Angels and Clippers, and overall planned over 100 telecasts this season and was aiming for more than 150 next year.
Fox and Time Warner make for odd bedfellows. The two are considered the main rivals for signing the Dodgers to a new media rights deal. Prime Ticket is already planning a Spanish-language channel for the Lakers next season.
In their news release on the new Spanish-language schedule, the Dodgers claimed that more than 40% of Dodgers fans were Hispanic.
