Ted Lilly throws bullpen session but opening-day status remains unclear

PHOENIX – Ted Lilly threw what he described as a pain-free bullpen session on Friday morning, but it was still unclear if he would pitch in the Dodgers’ season-opening series in San Diego.

“I’d like to,” Lilly said. “But, ultimately, it’s going to come down to what’s best for 25 guys, not just myself.”

Lilly hadn’t thrown since March 21 because of a stiff neck.

“I was happy that my pen went well,” he said. “I was able to let it go. I didn’t feel anything grabbing.”

Lilly said he didn’t feel as if he lost any arm strength. However, because the injury cost him two starts, he hasn’t built up his pitch count.

“I’m a little behind,” he said.

Lilly said his next step would probably be to pitch in a simulated game.

If Lilly starts the season on the disabled list, No. 5 starter Chris Capuano would slide into his spot. With the four-game series in San Diego followed by a day off and Clayton Kershaw scheduled to start the home opener April 10, the Dodgers were previously planning to skip Capuano’s first turn in the rotation.

Under that scenario, Lilly would probably make his first start April 14 against the Padres in Los Angeles.
