Matt Kemp leaves game after apparently aggravating hamstring [Updated]
This, as they say, cannot be good. It could, however, be really, really bad.
Matt Kemp slowed down just before reaching first while running out a grounder to end the third inning Sunday, and then left the game.
Kemp has been nursing a sore hamstring and appeared to have aggravated the injury. After meeting with assistant trainer Greg Harrel near the photo well and exiting the game, Kemp slammed his glove into the dugout in frustration.
Kemp first suffered the hamstring injury May 5 in Chicago. He only pinch-hit the next day, but the Dodgers then elected to start him every game this week. Manager Don Mattingly talked as if he was convinced the hamstring was healthy.
Kemp got off to the best offensive start in the majors, but recently has been struggling. He has yet to hit a home run in May and is batting only .212 (seven for 33) with three runs batted in.
He and Andre Ethier have provided almost all of the Dodgers’ power. Between them, they have 19 of the team’s 28 home runs.
The Dodgers had no immediate update on Kemp’s condition.
[Updated at 3:10 p.m.: The Dodgers announced in the fifth inning that Kemp had left the game with an irritated left hamstring.]
