Poll: Will Hanley Ramirez propel Dodgers to NL West title?

When Dodgers President Stan Kasten warned that the team would be making moves “governed by reason” in the days leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, it seemed as if he was merely using front-office jargon to tell fans “wait till next year.”

Well, it looks like the pessimists were wrong.

The Dodgers acquired three-time all-star Hanley Ramirez and reliever Randy Choate from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday in exchange for starter Nathan Eovaldi and minor-league pitcher Scott McGough, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been formally announced.

The Dodgers will have to eat the rest of Ramirez’s contract -- about $38 million in financial commitments through the 2014 season -- but the move shows that the new owners are willing to spend money in order to improve the team.

Perhaps we shouldn’t have scoffed when Dodgers Chairman Mark Walter said last week that the team was only a few moves away from winning a World Series.

Still, is this a good move for the Dodgers? Will Ramirez make a positive difference and help the Dodgers win the NL West this season or possibly even more?
