The Dodgers have an agreement in place to acquire utility man Skip Schumaker from the St. Louis Cardinals, according to a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to discuss it. The trade is contingent on Schumaker passing a physical examination.

Hitting coach Mark McGwire pushed for the Dodgers to acquire the 35-year-old Schumaker, whom he worked with in St. Louis.

Schumaker, who bats left-handed, is a career .305 hitter against right-handed pitchers. He is expected to share time at second base with the right-handed-hitting Mark Ellis. Schumaker can also play all three outfield positions.
