Dodgers sign Aaron Miles to a minor league contract
Aaron Miles is back.
The 35-year-old utilityman signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers and is working out at their spring training facility in Arizona.
Miles was a pleasant surprise for the Dodgers last season, when he made the team as a non-roster player. He was forced into a more prominent role than expected because of injuries to the likes of Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake and Juan Uribe, and started 110 games.
In all, Miles batted .275 with three home runs and 45 RBIs.
But Miles misplayed the free-agent market and started the season without a job.
His addition provides the Dodgers with infield depth. Uribe, the starting third baseman, is 33 and coming off an injury-plagued season in which he was limited to 77 games. Starting second baseman Mark Ellis is 34 and utilityman Adam Kennedy is 35. Jerry Hairston Jr., who turns 36 next week, is on the disabled list with a strained hamstring.
