Orel Hershiser wants to save Dodger Stadium by double-decking the right-field pavilion?

Not exactly, even if that might be the most striking feature of a stadium renovation rendering he released Friday. Hershiser, the pitching star for the Dodgers’ last World Series championship team in 1988, said he hoped to use the drawing to share with prospective new owners a vision for the preservation and enhancement of Dodger Stadium.

“People don’t know how heartfelt I am about keeping Dodger Stadium,” Hershiser said in an interview Friday.

Three bidders remain in contention to buy the Dodgers, and outgoing owner Frank McCourt is expected to conduct final negotiations this week. Hershiser was part of a group that did not survive the first cut in the bidding, but he said he and his partners -- most notably, the South Korean electronics giant LG -- wanted to present their ideas to the fans as well as to potential owners.

The core concept is to turn Dodger Stadium into a “futuristic electronic showcase” to enhance fan enjoyment, particularly in this era of mobile technology, according to a press release issued Friday. Yet some elements of the rendering appear jarring -- a double-deck pavilion in right field, demolition of the reserve deck down the left-field line, and an overall view beyond the outfield wall that closely resembles the cavernous home of the Texas Rangers.

The rendering also includes a video board with a picture of Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. Hershiser said Kershaw granted permission for the use of his likeness.

Hershiser said he does not mind if fans do not like some -- or all -- of the elements in the proposed renovation.

“We just want to give people a dream of what could happen,” he said. “You can’t tell the story without a picture. The idea is to show people all the elements that are possible and not to say, ‘This is it.’ ”

Hershiser said he has discussed his plans with Dodgers bid groups but does not expect to be involved with any of them.

“We haven’t found a home,” he said. “This is my last speech. I’m rooting for the new owner.”
