Picking up Brandon League doesn’t mean Dodgers are done dealing

Brandon League is coming, but who’s going?

The Dodgers announced their trade for the veteran right-handed reliever after Monday’s game, but not how they would make room for him on their roster. They don’t have to make the actual move until League arrives Tuesday.

History says one reason for delaying the corresponding move on the eve of the nonwaiver trading deadline is the Dodgers are still working on another trade. A current reliever could be part of still another deal prior to Tuesday’s 1 p.m. trade deadline.

Asked if there was more still to come, Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti simply smiled and said, “We’ll see.” All coy like.

By the end of Monday’s game, the Dodgers were heavy one reliever. Somebody -- Josh Lindblom? -- could yet be included in a package to acquire Cubs starter Ryan Dempster or Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino.

League is 29, earning $5 million this year and can become a free agent at the end of the season. He was the Mariners’ closer last year, saving 37 games. He struggled early this season and lost his closer’s role to Tom Wilhelmsen. On the season he is 0-5 with a 3.63 ERA and nine saves in 15 opportunities. Until allowing three runs in his last appearance Sunday, he had a 0.96 ERA in his previous nine games.

“I’ve seen this guy; he’s dirty,” said Manager Don Mattingly. “He’s like [Ronald Belisario]. When he gets the ball down, he gets everybody out. He’s filthy.

“We saw him struggle early, but this is one of those guys as a hitter, you don’t want to face.”

League is a solid addition to the bullpen, someone Colletti said could pitch in the seventh, eighth or ninth inning.

If he proves a two-month rental, League cost the Dodgers only a pair of minor leaguers: outfielder Leon Landry at Class-A Rancho Cucamonga and double-A Chattanooga right-hander Logan Bawcom.

Landry, 22, was taken in the third round of the 2010 draft and was hitting .328 with eight home runs, 51 RBI and 20 stolen bases for Rancho. Colletti said both players had a chance to make the majors.

After picking up infielder Hanley Ramirez and reliever Randy Choate last week, the addition of League is Colletti’s second deal prior to the deadline. Which still doesn’t make it his last.
