Forget star players. It seems you can never have enough coaching.

The Dodgers finalized their coaching staff for the 2013 season Tuesday, officially adding John Valentin as the assistant hitting coach and Chuck Crim as the bullpen coach to Manager Don Mattingly’s staff.

Valentin was the Dodgers’ triple-A Albuquerque hitting coach the last two seasons, while Crim served as their double-A Chattanooga pitching coach the last two years. Both are former major leaguers.

Ken Howell, who had been the bullpen coach for the past five seasons, will now serve as the newly created assistant pitching coach.

Mark McGwire is the hitting coach and Ricky Honeycutt the pitching coach. Also returning are Trey Hillman (bench coach), Davey Lopes (first base) and Tim Wallach (third).

That’s a surplus of coaches. Major League Baseball only allows six to actually suit up during the games. Valentin and Howell will not be in uniform or in the dugout once the games commence.

Also coaching pregame are Manny Mota (his 34th season) and Steve Yeager, who splits coaching duties at the major and minor league levels.

The only coach from last season not returning is former hitting coach Dave Hansen, who has accepted the same position with the Seattle Mariners.
