Dodgers to start Stephen Fife vs. Giants; Scott Elbert to DL
The Great Mystery of 2012, or at least the minor one of week, was solved when the Dodgers finally announced who would start in San Francisco on Friday.
They placed left-hander Scott Elbert on the disabled list with a sore elbow and recalled right-hander Stephen Fife from triple-A Albuquerque to start in the opener against the Giants at AT&T; Park.
This will mark Fife’s second career start. His first came against Roy Halladay and the Phillies on July 17. This time he draws Matt Cain. Some guys get all the luck.
Fife, however, actually out-pitched Halladay, allowing only one run on four hits in six innings. He made one start for Albuquerque after being sent down, striking out a career-high 12 and allowing one run in seven innings.
The only way the 25-year-old Fife could have been recalled less than 10 days after being sent back down was if a player was placed on the DL.
Fife is taking the spot in the rotation of Nathan Eovaldi, the right-hander who was the key to the Dodgers trading for infielder Hanley Ramirez and left-handed reliever Randy Choate.
Choate’s addition becomes even more relevant with Elbert going to the 15-day disabled list. Elbert had been pitching extremely well of late. Elbert had not allowed a run in his last nine appearances (8 innings) and has a 2.45 ERA.
Apparently anticipating the bullpen move, on Thursday the Dodgers called back right-handed reliever Shawn Tolleson.
