Injury report: Kenley Jansen, Chad Billingsley, Matt Kemp, more
These days, the Dodgers have to take roll before every game just to make sure they can field a healthy team. They need to hire someone full time just to keep up with their injury report.
Here’s Thursday’s pregame report, subject to change at a moment’s notice:
— Closer Kenley Jansen was seeing a cardiologist before the game to help him and the Dodgers determine the best course of action for the recurrence of his heart arrhythmia.
“We’re not really sure on Kenley,” said Manager Don Mattingly. “There are good scenarios and bad scenarios.”
Jansen missed a month when his condition was first diagnosed last summer and he went on blood thinners. Mattingly said the good scenario would be “that he can come back and pitch rather quickly.”
For now, Mattingly said he plans to use Brandon League and Ronald Belisario in the closer role.
— Chad Billingsley, on the disabled list with a sore elbow, was having a platelet-rich plasma injection Thursday in the hopes of speeding his recovery.
“It’s kind of the next step in seeing if he’s going to be able to pitch again this year,” Mattingly said.
Despite the recent addition of right-hander Josh Beckett, the Dodgers have been inquiring about adding yet another starter.
— Reliever Matt Guerrier, who’s been on the disabled list since April 24, with right elbow tendinitis, was activated and shortstop Dee Gordon was moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day.
Guerrier appeared in only six games (2.70 ERA) before succumbing to the sore elbow. He last pitched in a game April 18.
Moving Gordon to the 60-day DL only impacts his return by two days. He will be eligible to come off the disabled list on Monday, and the Dodgers were not planning to activate him until rosters can be expanded Sept. 1.
— Matt Kemp was not in the lineup Thursday, but Mattingly said it was not because of the left knee bruise or cut to his jaw, but because his left shoulder was stiff.
Kemp called himself day-to-day, and did not plan on participating in any baseball-related activity Thursday.
— Left-handed reliever Scott Elbert, who went back on the DL Wednesday for the second time with elbow inflammation, was scheduled to be examined by team doctors Thursday night.
“His is a matter of, can we get it calmed down so we can use him in some capacity,” Mattingly said. “He’s trying to get this calmed enough so we can use him just a little bit, against one or two guys.”
— Left-hander Ted Lilly, whom the Dodgers had already given up on returning this season as a starter, continues to struggle with his sore shoulder and now it doesn’t appear promising he can even return as a reliever.
Lilly was 5-1 with a 3.14 ERA and hoping for an All-Star nod when his shoulder flared up. He last started May 23. He has had several false starts in his comeback effort.
“He tried to play catch today, so his update is not good,” Mattingly said.
It’s a surfeit of injuries for a team to deal with as it begins a playoff stretch run.
“It is bad timing, there’s no doubt about that,” Mattingly said.
