Dodgers power past Pirates, 12-2

EXTRA BASES: The Dodgers scored a season-high 12 runs and ended a three-game losing streak, but they weren’t all smiles. Andre Ethier and Manager Don Mattingly appeared to be engaged in a heated argument in the dugout in the bottom of the eighth inning. When Ethier disappeared down the clubhouse tunnel, he was followed by Mattingly. Ethier, who struck out an inning earlier, played dumb when asked about the incident. “I guess you guys misinterpreted,” Ethier said. “You’re looking too far into it.” Ethier and Mattingly have had differences over the years. In the wake of the 2011 season, Mattingly estimated that Ethier’s lack of emotional control resulted in his squandering 100 at-bats. Last year, Mattingly benched Ethier on a day on which he publicly questioned his team’s mental toughness.

AT THE PLATE: Adrian Gonzalez was three for four with a run batted in, two runs scored and a walk. Matt Kemp ended an 0-for-20 skid with a run-scoring single in the first inning. Kemp finished the day two for four with two runs batted in. Justin Turner and Drew Butera each drove in two runs. Yasiel Puig reached base on an infield single in the third inning. The hit was his 43rd in May. Since the franchise moved to Los Angeles, only one Dodgers player has collected as many hits in May: Willie Davis, who had the same number in 1971.

ON THE MOUND: Hyun-Jin Ryu won his third consecutive start by limiting the Pirates to two runs and 10 hits over 62/3 innings. Jamey Wright earned his first save by tossing three scoreless innings in relief.
