Dodgers coach Davey Lopes hired by Nationals
Davey Lopes, who had coached for the Dodgers the past five seasons, was hired Thursday as first-base coach for the Washington Nationals.
Lopes will coach under new Nationals Manager Dusty Baker. The two were Dodgers teammates from 1976-81, winning a World Series championship in 1981.
When the Dodgers announced Oct. 22 that Don Mattingly would not return as manager, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said that Mattingly’s coaches were free to look for work elsewhere.
The Dodgers since have entered into negotiations to retain pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, according to the team website.
They also have at least nine candidates under consideration for manager. Friedman has said he hopes to hire one before the winter meetings start Dec. 7.
