HB Gold Chargers take care of Tritons
The Huntington Beach Gold Chargers bolted to an early lead and didn’t let up in posting a 28-6 victory over the San Clemente Black Tritons in a Pop Warner Football Jr. Midget Division game Saturday at Edison High.
The Huntington gave up its only score in the second quarter, and it was its defense that opened the scoring. Noseguard Jerian Operana recovered a fumble off a bad snap in the end zone, and Tanner Gunnell added a two-point conversion kick for an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.
On San Clemente’s ensuing possession, Huntington cornerback Hunter Arce intercepted a pass. Huntington took advantage when quarterback Cole Kelley ran for 20 yards, then hooked up with Brady Gardner on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Gunnell’s second kick made it 16-0 in the quarter.
The Black Tritons scored early in the second quarter but Huntington linebacker Mateo Lopez blocked the conversion kick. The Gold Chargers answered when Kelley scored on a 44-yard run.
Huntington linebacker Jaedon Davis blocked a punt later in the quarter, and the Gold Chargers moved in for one final score of the half. A pass from Kelley to receiver Parker Weuve covered 20 yards, and Kelley scored his second rushing touchdown for a 28-6 lead.
The Gold Chargers, winners of two straight, are on the road Saturday for a 5 p.m. game against the Santa Margarita Lions.
