House Speaker John Boehner endorses Mitt Romney

House Speaker John A. Boehner endorsed GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney in the latest nod from the Republican establishment for the party’s presumed front-runner.

For months Boehner had steered clear of signaling a preference in the belabored GOP primary race, particularly because of his shared time -- and differences -- in the House with then-Speaker Newt Gingrich. He also has been selected to be convention chairman.

“I’ve not taken a position on this presidential campaign because as chairman of the convention, I wanted to make sure all candidates had a fair process and a fair opportunity,” Boehner, an Ohio Republican, said Tuesday.

“But it’s clear now Mitt Romney is going to be our nominee,” Boehner said. “I think Mitt Romney has a set of economic policies that can put Americans back to work, and frankly, contrast sharply with the failed economic policies of President Obama. And I will be proud to support Mitt Romney and do everything I can to help him win.”
