Times’ ‘naughty’ and ‘nice’ list earns lump of coal from readers
The Times’ editorial board either needs to put itself on this year’s “naughty” list or take off a number of conservatives it put there, a majority of commenters on the Times’ website concluded over the holiday.
Though none of the more than 30 comments posted under the board’s annual “naughty” and “nice” list suggested any additions to the nice category, the second most popular comment was from “tommythek50,” who said that President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) should all be included on the naughty list for increasing the federal deficit.
Online user “jefferypsegall” and a few others countered that it is Republicans who are responsible for the increasing debt, thanks to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the Bush-era tax cuts and Dubya kicking off the first of the government bailouts as the recession set in.
For the most part, readers ignored the nonpolitical entries on the list, including Fox News’ inclusion on the “nice” side or “The Hobbit” director Peter Jackson’s placement on the naughty.
Nope, for readers it was all about politics, as they debated if recently resigned CIA chief David H. Petraeus should have been singled out alongside his biographer, Paula Broadwell, and if Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s placement o the naughty side for her staunch opposition to offering services to illegal immigrants was fair.
So go ahead, readers. Here’s your opportunity to offer your own suggestions.
