1 adult dead, dozens of pupils hurt in Illinois school bus crash

A school bus driver may have driven through a red light before his vehicle collided with two others, leaving one adult dead and more than two dozen students injured, officials said on Friday.

The accident took place around 8:05 a.m. near Wadsworth in Lake County in northeast Illinois. The school bus was carrying students to Newport Elementary School, which has kindergarten through fifth grade pupils.

All 35 people aboard the bus survived the crash, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran Jr. told reporters at a news conference.

The bus driver, who was speaking with investigators, may have been late going through the red light, the sheriff said. The bus hit a Jeep Wrangler. A Jeep Cherokee was also struck and badly damaged.

“The bus ... struck the vehicle, essentially close to a T-bone on the passenger section of the Jeep Wrangler,” Curran said.

The driver of the Wrangler was killed, officials said.

Twenty-three of the children were taken by another school bus to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Twelve children were taken by ambulance to other hospitals, along with two people from the Jeep Cherokee.

Initial reports said 23 patients were in good to fair condition and two in fair to serious condition.

The accident happened about a mile from the school, which has about 400 students. The village of Wadsworth is about 45 miles north of Chicago.
