Albuquerque man stuck under motorcycle likely regrets police call
Antonio Candelaria had an embarrassing problem: He was lying in the driveway of his Albuquerque home Saturday night, his foot stuck beneath his motorcycle. He couldn’t budge.
The 50-year-old could have called just about anyone – his best friend, his local priest or, heck, even his mother-in-law.
But no, Candelaria whipped out his cellphone and called police, who arrived to promptly arrest the motorcyclist on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Albuquerque police said Candelaria’s breath test results registered above 0.16, which is twice the legal limit in New Mexico.
Local TV showed Candelaria as he appeared in court Monday morning, dressed in a gray sweatshirt and sitting stooped low before the judge.
Then things went even further south.
Court records reviewed by the judge showed that Candelaria had numerous DUI arrests and several convictions. The cameras rolled in court as deputies handcuffed the man, doubled his bail, and sent him back to jail.
Tasia Martinez, a spokeswoman for the Albuquerque police department, told the Los Angeles Times that in the case of drinking and driving, even being on your home turf isn’t enough to avoid arrest: “You’re still in control of the motor vehicle,” she said.
