Since the early 1980s, at least five serial killers, and possibly more, were active in the South Los Angeles area. These killers targeted mostly young African American women, dumping their bodies in alleys, vacant buildings or parks. Similarities in the killings soon raised the alarm of residents and authorities.

In 1987, Daniel Lee Siebert confessed to killing two women in South L.A. while awaiting trial for four murders in Alabama. Two years later, Louis Craine was convicted of the first-degree murder of four women. He was sentenced to death but died in a prison hospital within months of his conviction. Michael Hughes was convicted in 1998 of murdering four women and wassentenced to life in prison, and was later tied through DNA to four more homicides. Chester DeWayne Turner was sentenced to death in 2007 for the murder of 10 women in South Los Angeles and is suspected in at least seven others. In July, Lonnie Franklin Jr. was charged with the murders of ten women, all victims of a killer dubbed the Grim Sleeper.
