George Zimmerman’s wife arrested on suspicion of perjury

George Zimmerman’s wife was arrested on suspicion of perjury Tuesday after allegedly lying to a judge about the couple’s finances during her husband’s bond hearing, according to a court affidavit.

Shellie Zimmerman’s arrest comes almost two weeks after a judge revoked her husband’s bond, citing similar financial questions.

George Zimmerman surrendered to Seminole County Jail in Florida on June 3. The former neighborhood watch volunteer has been charged with second-degree murder in the February shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, who was unarmed.

Shellie Zimmerman, 25, was booked at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, paid her $1,000 bail and was released, officials said. Her arraignment is scheduled for July 31.

During an April 20 bond hearing, she was asked whether she and her husband had enough money or assets to pay the bond.

“Uhm, not – not that I’m aware of,” Shellie Zimmerman responded, the affidavit said.

It was later revealed that the defendant had raised more than $200,000 from a website the family set up to solicit contributions. In the three days before her husband’s bond hearing, she transferred more than $74,000 from his account, investigators said in the affidavit. Then, once his bond was set, she transferred more than $85,000 back.

“This court was led to believe they didn’t have a single penny,” prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda said when George Zimmerman’s bond was revoked. “It was misleading, and I don’t know what words to use other than it was a blatant lie.”
