Google buys Nest, to be part of the ‘conscious home’ of the future
Google has bought Nest for $3.2 billion. It’s the search giant’s second-largest acquisition ever, after Motorola Mobility last year, a $12.5-billion purchase.
So, why would the search giant’s second-biggest acquisition be a company that sells thermostats and smoke alarms? Because Google has designs on the connected-home market. Nest’s products can be operated through apps on your smartphone.
As the L.A. Times Jessica Guynn reported, Nest Labs is keeping plans for future products top secret, but “many people expect Nest Labs to connect all kinds of devices in the home to the Internet, a vision for a smart home that is straight out of ‘The Jetsons.’”
Google will help the company create “the conscious home,” Nest co-founder Tony Fadell said.
