Veterans Day Quiz: Test your knowledge about those who served

Monday marks Veterans Day, an occasion to honor those who have been in the armed services.

President Obama, in his weekly address Saturday, asked the nation to do more than just thank those who have served.

“Now that more of them are coming home, we need to serve them as well as they served us. That requires more than a simple ‘thank you’ – especially from those of us who’ve been elected to serve,” Obama said, adding that those returning home should receive as much assistance as possible in reentering the civilian workforce.

Although established to honor all who have served in any military capacity, it is primarily intended to celebrate living veterans. Memorial Day, created in 1868 and originally called Decoration Day, largely honors those who have fallen in combat.

Veterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was temporarily moved to the fourth Monday of October from 1971 to 1978, but the federal holiday has otherwise been observed on Nov. 11, regardless of whether it falls on a weekend.

So take a moment to test your knowledge of Veterans Days past and of the country’s veterans -- and afterward you can locate an official Veterans Day event close to you via the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
