One dead, two wounded in shooting near New York’s Penn Station
An entrance to New York City’s Penn Station, one of the nation’s busiest public transit terminals, remained closed Monday as police investigated a fatal shooting on its steps.
The shooting occurred at 6:15 a.m. EST, and claimed three victims, including a 43-year-old man who was shot in the neck and died at the scene. He was identified by the Associated Press as Angel Quinones.
The shooting took place at a McDonald’s restaurant on 8th Avenue, between 34th and 35th streets, NYPD chief of detectives Robert Boyce said.
After a brief conversation with the victims, one of the suspects, described as a heavyset man in a black hooded sweatshirt, left the restaurant, waited for them to exit, then followed them to the subway entrance, where he fired four shots, Boyce told reporters at the scene. The shooting appeared to be drug-related, Boyce said at a later news conference. There was no description of the second suspect.
Jones said the suspect left the scene in a dark-colored sedan. He would not say if there was security camera footage of the shooting.
The McDonald’s where the encounter began is known in New York as a remnant of a fast-gentrifying city’s seedier past.
It reportedly serves as a waystation for clients of a methadone clinic and a separate needle-exchange program, both within two blocks.
Two of the victims, including the one who was killed, were known as regulars at the clinic, the West Midtown Medical Group, a client told the AP.
All three victims had criminal records for drug charges, the AP reported.
