GOP Senate candidate Tom Del Beccaro raises $145,000 for campaign
Reporting from Sacramento — Former state Republican chairman Tom Del Beccaro on Thursday reported raising $145,142 this year for his campaign to replace retiring California U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, trailing behind rival GOP candidate Georg “Duf” Sundheim and the two front-running Democratic candidates.
Del Beccaro, a Contra Costa County business lawyer, reported raising $49,151 in campaign contributions in the three-month period that ended Sept. 30. He reported spending $65,255 during that same period.
The campaign reported having $55,272 on hand as of Sept. 30, and $14,982 in campaign debt.
The Republican Senate candidate received contributions from a wide variety of Californians up and down the state, and most of his expenditures were for political consultants, setting up a campaign website and for campaign travel.
The Del Beccaro campaign provided a copy of his federal campaign finance report to the Los Angeles Times on Thursday. Thursday is the deadline for Senate candidates to file their reports to the Federal Election Commission for campaign money raised and spent between July 1 and Sept. 30.
Del Beccaro is running a campaign that hews toward his conservative politics. Del Beccaro, a regular on conservative talk radio around the state, has highlighted his pledge not to raise taxes. He also supports a federal flat tax, and touted endorsements by national economists Stephen Moore and Larry Kudlow for his Senate bid and tax proposal.
Del Beccaro led the state party from 2011 to 2013, a period when Republicans lost elections for every statewide office and suffered a historic blow as Democrats won a two-thirds supermajority in both houses of the Legislature for the first time in more than a century.
Del Beccaro was raised in Huntington, N.Y., a Long Island suburb of New York City, and the East Bay. He said his experience mediating business disputes was part of what qualified him for the Senate job.
Del Beccaro’s Republican rivals in the Senate race include Sundheim, who also served as chairman of the state Republican Party, and GOP Assemblyman Rocky Chavez of Oceanside. Sundheim reported raising $241,000 with $130,345 cash on hand and Chavez reported raising $93,579 this year and having $9,528 cash on hand.
The two top Democrats in the race are Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez of Garden Grove. Harris reported raising $6 million this year with $3.3 million cash on hand. Sanchez reported raising just under $1 million this year, with $1.6 million cash on hand.
