No more Lowenthal-vs-Lowenthal in Long Beach mayor’s race

Long Beach politics junkies may have relished the prospect of Democratic Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal duking it out for mayor next year with her ex-daughter-in-law, City Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal.

But a Lowenthal vs. Lowenthal match apparently was not to be, at least not this time.

Councilwoman Lowenthal had already launched her candidacy—along with seven others—when termed-out Assemblywoman Lowenthal announced last month she too was getting into the race.

Handicappers saw Bonnie Lowenthal as the early favorite.

Suja had another idea—she decided to run for Bonnie’s Assembly seat instead. And, according to her campaign announcement and her recently launched “Suja Lowenthal for Assembly” Facebook page, she has endorsed a candidate for mayor.

It’s not her former mother-in-law.

The Lowenthals are a very prominent, if fractured, family in Long Beach politics. Bonnie was formerly married to Democratic Rep. Alan Lowenthal, who served on the City Council and in the state Legislature before getting elected to Congress last year. Bonnie was elected to the school board and the City Council before going to the Assembly. They have regularly endorsed each other during their runs for offices.

One of their sons, Superior Court Judge Daniel Lowenthal, is Suja’s ex-husband.
