Wildfire burns 300 acres and 3 structures in Castaic area

A wildfire broke out Sunday afternoon in the Castaic area of the Angeles National Forest, burning about 300 acres and three structures by evening, officials said.

The so-called Warm fire, fueled by heavy brush, began about 3:30 p.m. and is “burning south aggressively,” according to the U.S. Forest Service. It said about 300 firefighters are battling the blaze, which is not yet contained.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is helping to fight the fire, said Miguel Ornelas, a supervising dispatcher with the county agency.

Ornelas said that he did not know where the fire began, but that county firefighters were dispatched to the defunct Warm Springs rehab center in the 38200 block of Lake Hughes Road. He said several outbuildings were burned.

Lake Hughes Road is closed between Elizabeth Lake and Castaic, the Forest Service said.

A heat wave gripped the Los Angeles area over the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures reached 100 degrees on Sunday at the Warm Springs station closest to the fire.

Firefighters also were battling two other significant blazes in Los Angeles County: The Cabin fire, which began Friday near Glendora, scorched more than 1,400 acres; and the Lincoln fire, which began Sunday, blazed through Montebello and caused the closure of the eastbound 60 Freeway for several hours.
