‘Suge’ Knight back in jail cell after collapsing in court

Former rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight was returned to custody early Monday after collapsing in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Friday after a judge set his bail at $25 million.

Knight was returned to his quarters at Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, said Nicole Nishida, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.

The Death Row Records cofounder collapsed and was briefly unconscious in court after a judge ordered Knight to remain in custody on $25-million bail. Knight later received medical treatment at a jail hospital.

During the hearing, Knight’s left shoulder was twitching and he appeared to tense up.

It wasn’t Knight’s first medical episode since he has been jailed in Los Angeles.

In February, he was hospitalized twice after court appearances. Knight was rushed to the hospital for stomach-related medical issues and an unspecified medical emergency.

During the bail proceedings, Knight’s attorney, Matthew Fletcher, argued for a lower bail amount, saying his client was not a flight risk because he was so recognizable.

“If his name wasn’t Suge Knight, they wouldn’t have filed this case,” he said.

But Deputy Dist. Atty. Cynthia J. Barnes said the former rap mogul’s bail should have been higher due to Knight’s previous run-ins with law enforcement.

Knight has been implicated in robberies, extortion, money laundering, assaults, witness intimidation and battery in the past, an affidavit filed by the prosecutor said.

Knight is now accused of deliberately running over Terry Carter, 55, and Cle “Bone” Sloan, 51, in a restaurant parking lot on Jan. 29 after an argument on the set of a commercial about the film “Straight Outta Compton.” Carter died and Sloan was injured.

Hours later, Knight surrendered to authorities.

The production of “Straight Outta Compton” sparked Knight’s anger last year, according to the court documents.

Knight is charged with murder, attempted murder and two counts of hit-and-run with an allegation that he committed a violent felony while out on bail in another case.

Before the hit-and-run case, Knight was out on bail in an alleged robbery on Sept. 5. Knight and Micah “Katt” Williams are charged with stealing a Beverly Hills photographer’s camera.
