Students suspended for making ‘twerking’ video on campus
SAN DIEGO -- A group of San Diego high school students has been suspended for making a risqué video on campus of teens involved in “twerking.”
The students at Scripps Ranch High School were suspended after school officials noticed the video on the Internet. In it, fully clothed students are seen moving their hips and buttocks in a suggestive fashion.
The suspensions were first reported by San Diego station KNSD-TV Channel 7, which said 33 students had been suspended.
School board Trustee Scott Barnett called Thursday for the suspensions to be discussed in closed session by the school board at its next meeting, May 14.
“I take issues of proper conduct and discipline very seriously,” Barnett said in an email. “At the same time I need to be satisfied that the consequences of these actions are reasonable and proportionate.”
Although the exact derivation of “twerking” is unknown, it may be a combination of “twist and jerk” or a phrase meant to designate “to work it.”
