Two guns -- one fake, one real -- found on man killed by deputies
A man with gang ties punched and tried to shoot at sheriff’s deputies in South Los Angeles moments before he was shot by law enforcement officers, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Authorities continue to investigate Saturday night’s shooting in the 6100 block of Miramonte Boulevard in South Los Angeles, where police shot and killed a man after he and his family got into a fight with sheriff’s deputies, officials said.
The fight occurred about 9:10 p.m., after sheriff’s deputies said they saw a man riding a bicycle with no headlights or tail lights who appeared to be intoxicated. When police tried to stop him, the man rode on.
The bicyclist eventually stopped at a home on Miramonte Boulevard and headed to the back. The two deputies who tried to stop him followed him and confronted him.
Police say that’s when the man punched one of the deputies and both the man and deputy fell to the ground. While the two struggled on the ground, officials said, the man’s family rushed out from the home and joined in, punching and yelling at the deputies.
That’s when authorities say the man pulled out a gun. The deputies then pulled out their guns and fired, killing the man.
Police said that gun, along with a second, replica handgun, was found on the man. Authorities say several of the family members who attacked police are gang members. The identity of the man was not immediately available.
