Police chase ends with shooting near Facebook’s headquarters

Three people allegedly involved in an armed home invasion Wednesday in the Bay Area led police on a chase that ended near Facebook’s headquarters, where officers were shot at by the trio, authorities said.

About 5 p.m., police in Fremont responded to a home robbery in the 39800 block of Fremont Boulevard, where witnesses told police that the three people involved in the break-in fled in a vehicle, according to the Fremont Police Department.

A Fremont police detective saw the vehicle heading westbound on State Route 84 and -- with the help of a Newark police officer -- chased the trio to Menlo Park, officials said.

There, the three suspected robbers got out of the car near Willow Road and Hamilton Avenue, about a quarter-mile from Facebook’s headquarters, and fled on foot, officials said.

At some point, one of the three fired at the Fremont and Newark police officers. No officers were injured, but gunfire struck a Newark Police Department patrol car, officials said.

Following a lengthy search of the area, two people were taken into custody. Their identities were not released.

Two guns were recovered at the scene.
