A 2-mile stretch of Orange County coast was briefly closed to swimmers Tuesday afternoon when a shark was spotted near the beach.

An approximately 8-foot shark was seen about 4 p.m. near Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point, said Jason Young, the chief of Orange County Lifeguards.

The shark was seen about 300 yards from the shore, and the proximity to swimmers prompted authorities to clear the waters and search for the fish.

No injuries were reported, Young said.

Salt Creek Beach and Strands Beach were closed to swimmers as crews searched by boat and helicopter for the shark, Young said.

The additional search teams did not locate the shark, so after about an hour, authorities reopened the waters for swimmers and posted warning signs for beachgoers.
