Second surfer dies at Swami’s Beach in northern San Diego County
A surfer died Monday at Swami’s Beach in Encinitas in northern San Diego County -- the second fatality at the beach in four days.
Joy Froding, 57, who lived in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, was surfing when she complained of chest pain, according to the county medical examiner. Other surfers got her to the beach and began CPR.
When paramedics arrived, she did not have a pulse, the medical examiner said. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No cause of death has been determined.
Early Friday, the body of a 61-year-old surfer was discovered on the beach. The man was wearing a wetsuit and was attached to his surfboard by a leash, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The county medical examiner identified the man as Kenneth Mann of Encinitas. His cause of death was listed as drowning.
