Earthquake jolts Santa Monica and West L.A.
A shallow magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck Santa Monica and West Los Angeles late Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The temblor occurred at 10:28 p.m. between Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades, according to the USGS.
The jolt was felt across the Westside, Culver City and parts of the San Fernando Valley.
Dr. Lucy Jones, a prominent seismologist, said on Twitter that there was a 5% chance the quake was a foreshock, and a “much, much smaller” chance that it was a foreshock to a bigger earthquake.
The quake spawned a flurry of interest on social media: a mix of sarcasm, anxiety and curiosity — to which Jones offered sensible guidance.
Magnitude 3.0 “quakes happen in California every week,” she said. “The only thing different is the number of people living on top of it.”
