A robbery at a marijuana clinic in the San Fernando Valley sparked a police pursuit and a shootout as officers exchanged gunfire with suspects, authorities told The Times on Monday evening.

The shooting broke out about 4:30 p.m. after the two suspects stopped their vehicle and one of them exited and opened fire on pursuing officers, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The windshield of a patrol car was riddled with bullet holes, according to television footage.

The suspect fled the area, near Tampa Avenue and Strathern Street, as other officers swarmed the area and set up a perimeter.

One officer sustained a minor injury to his hand, possibly from flying glass or metal, the LAPD said.

Officers in the San Fernando Valley were placed on a modified tactical alert, which means that they could be held over when their shifts ended and respond only to high-priority calls.
