USC evacuates part of campus after gas line is severed

A portion of the USC campus was evacuated Thursday morning after a gas line was accidentally severed by a construction crew working on campus, officials said.

Around 11:23 a.m. the crew cut an underground pipe that caused a significant gas leak near Downey and Watt ways, said David Carlisle, deputy chief of USC’s Department of Public Safety.

Nearby classrooms and about one square block of the campus were evacuated and traffic redirected, he said. No injuries were reported and the leak is expected to be repaired quickly, he said. Firefighters were at the scene, he said.

An alert sent to students shortly after the leak advised them to avoid the area.
